Anyone who has known me closely knows that when I say that a song is “my favorite,” most likely an hour later the identical words will come out of my mouth in regards to another. I love music, and I have numerous “favorite” songs.

When it comes to Christmas songs, I have favorites in different categories.

My favorite Christmas carol is “The First Noel.” In my opinion it’s the prettiest carol harmonically, and when I was a little girl, I always liked how my mom would sing the high obbligato part at the end of the chorus.

My favorite fun song for Christmas is Sleigh Ride…I mean I can’t think of a fun-ner song at Christmas! (Plus, it would always play on the radio right before they announced the school closings on snow days!)

My favorite happy song (and yes that is different from fun!) is the Christmas Waltz…it reminds me of everything wonderful that Christmas is!

My favorite “church” song is the ladies trio song “He’s Emmanuel.” The harmonies are gorgeous and it always gives me goosebumps! It is a perfect picture of the story of Christfrom beginning to end and has a clear gospel message. And again, it always reminds me of my mom because she has sung it on multiple occasions with several different groups!

My favorite childrens Christmas song is “Old Toy Trains.” I have always loved this song! My dad has a big green train board with a real electric train complete with smoke that would come out of the top of the engine. It used to be tradition that we would set it up every year at Christmas time…a few years our Christmas tree even went in the middle. As long as I live I will never forget the smell of that smoke that the train made…a smell in my mind that will be forever associated with Christmas.

Up til a few minutes ago the only version that I had ever heard of the song was by the childrens singer “Raffi.” The youtube video for his version no longer works, but I found a video of Toby Keith’s version which is really great too. The song I grew up listening to had slightly different lyrics that weren’t gender specific mainly “little toy drums” instead of “little boy toys” and then “little one” instead of “little boy.” (Just in case you were wondering why I loved a song written for little boys so much!!)

My favorite modern/pop Christmas song is “This Christmas Time” by Lonestar. For more on WHY it is my favorite, you will have to wait and read my post on the 21st which will be entitled “What the First Christmas Means to Me.” But, the basic idea is something that I believe almost every military wife feels: “The greatest gift in life is you and me together.”

My all-time favorite Christmas song is “The Littlest Angel of All” by Bing Crosby. It always makes me very sad and sometimes it even makes me cry. It reminds me of how precious children are in the sight of God. It gives me a picture of all the little ones, especially my little one, gone on before us who never got to live a fulfilled life here on earth and what their lives are like in heaven. Most of all, it encourages me that God appreciates little things most of all.
