Celebratory Songs of Remembrance for the Lord’s Table

While it’s been over two years since I’ve written a blog post for this series, Come to the Table, this post has been on my heart for far longer than that. As I have rediscovered and grown in love and appreciation for the ordinance of the Lord’s Table, music has been one of the biggest catalysts for growth.
There are so many beautiful songs that approach the Lord’s table and focus on some of the more positive elements of the observance. The Lord’s Table is a memorial, and there’s an element to it that always will be (and should be) somber. I grew up singing any number of wonderful songs and hymns to that end. But to focus only on Christ’s suffering is to focus on only one part of Christ’s intentions in establishing the ordinance. As I have mentioned in prior posts, the Lord’s table is an invitation to a corporate celebration of all that Christ has done in His death, burial, and resurrection…as well as a celebration of the New Covenant (New Testament) that He established with us through His death.
Following is a list of songs that I would characterize as “happy “communion songs. These songs focus on the celebratory aspects of the Lord’s Table ordinance: corporate worship and unity, welcome and acceptance, feasting, remembrance, and celebration. I challenge you to spend some time listening to these songs, particularly next time you prepare your heart for the ordinance.

Happy Communion Songs
The Table by Chris Tomlin
I will feast at the table of the Lord
There is peace at the table of the Lord
There is healing at the table of the Lord
I know He has a place for me
Oh, what joy will fill my heart!
With the saints around the mercy seat of God…
Come all you weary; come and find
His yoke is easy; his burden light
He is able; He will restore
At the table of the Lord
Remember by Laura Story
This is the body that was torn for us
This is the blood that was spilt
Points to the pain you endured for us
Points to the shame, the blame, the guilt
This is the Lamb who was slain for us
So we the church may enter in
So bitter sweet when we think of You
The One who bore our curse, our sin
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, come
Move our hearts to remember, to remember
Jesus, Thank You by Sovereign Grace Music
By Your perfect sacrifice I’ve been brought near
Your enemy You’ve made Your friend
Pouring out the riches of Your glorious grace
Your mercy and Your kindness know no end
Your blood has washed away my sin
Jesus, thank You
The Father’s wrath completely satisfied
Jesus, thank You
Once Your enemy, now seated at Your table
Jesus, thank You
Here Is Love, Vast as the Ocean (Everlasting Praise) by the Gettys & Sandra McCracken
O this love, vast love of Jesus
Bids us come and drink and live
To this weary world of longing
What more could our Savior give?
Now to Christ who fully loved us
And who freed us from our sin
Be all glory and dominion
Everlasting praise to Him!

Behold the Lamb (Communion Hymn) by Keith & Kristyn Getty
Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away,
Slain for us – and we remember
The promise made that all who come in faith
Find forgiveness at the cross.
So we share in this bread of life,
And we drink of His sacrifice
As a sign of our bonds of peace
Around the table of the King.

Come to the Table by Sidewalk Prophets
We were hungry, we were thirsty
With nothing left to give
Oh, the shape that we were in
And just when all hope seemed lost
Love opened the door for us
He said, “Come to the table
Come join the sinners who have been redeemed”
Take your place beside the Savior
Sit down and be set free
Come to the table
Come to the Table by Acoustic Truth
Come with all your failures
Come just as you are
With faltered steps
And a broken heart
Come to me, Come to the table
Where the blood of suffering
And the sin of all are able
To meet as one
Forgiveness through the Son
So My death be remembered
Come to the Table by Clint Stevens
Come to the table and feast
There’s joy for the wanderer and rest for the weak
Come to the table and feast
Come to the table and drink
From the deepest of wells, from the heart of the King
Come to the table and drink
Where He offers the robe
Of his righteousness
So we can fully know Him
Who brings covenant peace

Come to the Table of the King by Matt Weeks
Come to the table of the King
You’re loved and welcomed in and there’s a place for you
Bring your hunger and your thirst
Your worries and your worst
Oh, there’s grace enough for you
All His mercy here for you
When you come to the table of the King
Come and find belonging, come and find your healing
Come remember Jesus gave His body
Jesus gave His blood for you to live
Mercy by Matt Redman
We will lift up the cup, and the bread we will break
Remembering your love
We were fallen from grace, but you took on our shame
And nailed it to a cross
Mercy, mercy as endless as the sea
I’ll sing your hallelujah for all eternity
May I never lose the wonder
Oh, the wonder of your mercy
May I sing your hallelujah
Hallelujah, amen
