Recovery & Coronavirus Quarantine: Life in the Post-Injury Twilight Zone

March 25, 2020 by Aprille Leave a Comment

It’s been 17 days since I broke my leg in three places. It’s also been 1,118,681,654 years since this virus quarantine stuff started. At least that’s how it feels.

Little Free Library: a social-distancing-friendly way to get kids out of the house

March 19, 2020 by Aprille Leave a Comment

I think all of us moms are reeling from the current world happenings due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Many moms used to sending their kids to school have been thrust into a homeschooling environment overnight. Even us homeschoolers are adjusting to a new normal that doesn’t include field-trips, co-ops, playdates, and trips to the local library. Even going to the park or playing with the neighbor kids seems too risky! While our local libraries are still offering online ordering and curbside pickup (hallelujah!), I’ve been thinking a lot about another avenue to practice social distancing while still getting your kids out of the house. May I introduce you to Little Free Library.

Fracture: an update on our unexpectedly-upended family

March 14, 2020 by Aprille 6 Comments

I’m out of town and broke my leg in 3 places. Our family is fractured, splintered, and stretched further than ever before. This is SO HARD on all of us.

Love in the Deep End: A Star is Born

December 24, 2019 by Aprille 1 Comment

A deep and broken love…a star is born. Not the star of a woman thrust into fame, but the star of sacrificial love that burned bright because a woman gave herself away by loving in the deep end. I want to love like that.

No, medicating my child’s ADHD is not the easy way out

April 5, 2019 by Aprille 4 Comments

Medicating your child’s ADHD can feel like a part-time job some days. This is why I say that medicating is totally NOT the easy way out for parents. If anything, it’s harder. But if it allows your child to lead a successful life and be the best version of himself he can be, then it is totally worth it.

Creating a Family-Friendly Office: A Guide for Therapists & Doctors

March 14, 2019 by Aprille 6 Comments

If you are a therapist, doctor, or someone in the healthcare or human services industry, you have probably put a lot of thought into your office. My personal experience, though, is that often the office (where the client or patient is engaged) is adequate but the entire facility (especially the waiting area) has much to … [Read more…]

Money & Mental Health (the things I don’t want to talk about)

March 1, 2019 by Aprille 1 Comment

I spent almost the entire day yesterday on Indeed.com. I spent the last three hours of the day looking at disability grants and scholarships. My eyes are blurry, my head aches, and I’m really not any closer to answers. The short story is that our family is in a bit of a money crisis. But … [Read more…]

Hormones & Fatigue: Fighting Fatigue by Understanding My Cycle

February 19, 2019 by Aprille Leave a Comment

In my last post, Hormones & Fatigue: Part 1 – My Health & Weight History (and Update), I explained what I have gone through in the last ten years regarding my health, weight loss and weight gain, and understanding my hormonal cycle. This is one of the things I shared in that post: In this post, … [Read more…]

Hormones & Fatigue: Part 1 – My Health & Weight History (and Update)

February 17, 2019 by Aprille 1 Comment

Structuring my life and health AROUND my hormonal cycle is the only way I succeed at anything. I think I will always struggle with fatigue, anxiety, depression, weight management, and digestive issues. This doesn’t mean there’s necessarily something “wrong” with me. It’s a combination of genetics and my overly-stressful life. Sometimes, playing the cards you’ve been dealt is better than trying to find new ones. Being the best me I can be within my health limitations has done more for me than trying to pathologize and fix my limitations ever did.

When you’re discouraged and don’t know what to do, take a walk

February 2, 2019 by Aprille 3 Comments

We return home wet, muddy, and hungry. I’m still just as lost as to what to do to help him. I’m discouraged, yet somehow a little bit refreshed from our adventure walk. I hope and pray that he is too.
