It’s just another (normal?) manic Thursday

March 18, 2021 by Aprille Leave a Comment

“If I didn’t know who that kid was, I would say he’s as high as a kite.” These are the words coming out of the mouth of my husband first thing this morning. Let’s just say that when I dreamed of having a husband and kids, conversations like this about our manic 10-year-old were not on my list of expected issues.

I’m pretty sure that all of these sleep issues he’s been having are manic episodes.

10 baby items I’m still using 10 years later

September 6, 2020 by Aprille Leave a Comment

As of tomorrow, I’ll officially have a 10-year-old on my hands. Instead of giving you an emotional tribute to 10 years of motherhood, I thought I’d do something fun, as well as practical. I’m sure there are thousands of posts out there about what you will really need for a new baby. But I want to talk about the 10 baby things I bought (or was given) as a brand-new mom that have stood the tests of time and two little boys. These are the must-haves of the must-haves:

Homeschooling special needs: a story of transformation

June 3, 2019 by Aprille 4 Comments

This morning, I walked into Ezra’s school and informed his principal we will be homeschooling next year.

Talk about one of the most terrifying moments of my life…

I could sit here and write 2000+ words about the steps that rapidly led up to this decision, the multitude of reasons as to why we feel like homeschooling is the best choice, the curriculum we are looking at, and the plans that we have. But none of that really matters, nor is it really anyone’s business.

That said, I feel that what I MUST chronicle is the transformation that has taken place in my heart and mind over the last week that I can only attribute to a miraculous act of God.

Spiritual warfare and special needs: “Remember who you battle.”

May 18, 2019 by Aprille 1 Comment

My counselor looked at me with a tilt of her sassy head and a half-smile and and said, “But girl, remember who you battle! You were riding high and Satan couldn’t have that. Satan hates the family, and he’s doing everything he can to destroy yours. He was gonna hit you hard and he sure did!”

Creating a Family-Friendly Office: A Guide for Therapists & Doctors

March 14, 2019 by Aprille 6 Comments

If you are a therapist, doctor, or someone in the healthcare or human services industry, you have probably put a lot of thought into your office. My personal experience, though, is that often the office (where the client or patient is engaged) is adequate but the entire facility (especially the waiting area) has much to … [Read more…]

A raw look at my never-ending war on perfectionism

January 15, 2019 by Aprille 1 Comment
A Little Princess movie snow perfectionism

A week ago we sat on the counselor’s couch. I was perturbed because even after declaring to my husband, “We’re here for you,” somehow the conversation kept coming around to me and my issues with perfectionism. *sigh* I say, “I just don’t know why God made me this way.” I’ve made significant strides in combating … [Read more…]

Introversion: I’m in turtle mode and that’s okay

October 17, 2016 by Aprille 4 Comments

I saw my counselor today. We met for an hour. I was exhausted before we even got going. When I got out, all I wanted to do was take a nap. That, my friends, is severe introversion at its best and finest. I long-ago made peace with the fact that I’m an introvert. (Thank you, … [Read more…]

When you’re too tired to be a good wife

April 16, 2016 by Aprille 7 Comments

This week was one of those weeks – the kind of week where I really was too tired to be a good wife. Little Brother was going through his sixth week of not sleeping through the night. (He has cut six teeth in five weeks while simultaneously figuring out hands-and-knees crawling AND pulling up – “wonder week” would be … [Read more…]
